How to read this table
All figures are annual medians except the caregiver rate, which is hourly. Nursing home rates cover room, board and routine care but not medications, therapy add-ons or specialised services; assisted living rates often exclude a la carte care charges. These are survey medians, not quotes — the facility's own price depends on the room, level of care and contract.
What changes the bill
Room type (private rooms cost more), the level of care (memory care and skilled nursing cost more than basic assisted living), state wage levels (which drive staffing costs) and the contract terms (entrance fees, add-ons, rate increases). Compare at least three facilities in the same category and ask for the complete fee schedule, not just the base rate.
